High Density Lipoprotein Trafficking of Cholesterol

چکیده

High density lipoprotein (HDL) is the smallest of the lipoproteins that transport lipids in the plasma. HDL particles apart from their participation in peripheral cholesterol transport also have distinct immunologic and antiatherogenic properties which are now referred to as the functionality of the HDL particle. There seems to be little relationship between HDL particle functionality and the cholesterol content of HDLs, namely HDLcholesterol (HDL-C) or HDL sizes. There are many genetic, lifestyle, hormonal, metabolic and inflammatory influences on HDL’s makeup and function and many of these may be manipulated by pharmacologic and lifestyle interventions. Structurally HDLs are similar to all lipoproteins with a one molecule thick surface of phospholipids (PL) and free or unesterified cholesterol (UC) and a core of mostly cholesteryl ester (CE) but also some triglycerides (TG). On the surface are numerous proteins including the main structural protein which is 1 to 4 copies of apolipoprotein A-I.

Serum Lipid Profile Alterations in Acute Leukemia Before and After Chemotherapy

Background: Serum lipids abnormalities have been observed in various forms of cancers including acute leukemia. Investigators report decreased total cholesterol and HDL, and elevated triglyceride in leukemic patients. Limited studies had been performed to discover the correlation between abnormal lipids profile and disease activity in leukemic patients in Iran. This study was done to evaluate t...

Triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholestrol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratios are predictors of cardiovascular risk in Iranian adults: Evidence from a population-based cross-sectional study

Background: The superiority of TG/HDL-C and LDL-C/HDL-C ratios in predicting  CVD risk is a matter of debates. Thus, the objective of this study was to compare TG/HDL-C and LDL-C to HDL-C ratios in predicting the risk of CVD events. Methods: In a population-based cross-sectional study, 567 representative participants aged 40 years or older were entered in the study in Babol, North of Iran. The...

Low high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and acute coronary syndrome in young patients admitted at a tertiary care facility

Background: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a cardiovascular disease which is related to mortality and morbidity among the Indians predominantly in the older age group. But, recently CAD has been found more often in young population. Hence, our study aims to observe the outcomes based on various categories of high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels estimated during admission at the h...

Association of Lecithin Cholesterol Acyltransferase rs5923 Polymorphism in Iranian Individuals with Extremely Low High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol: Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study

Background: The serum concentration of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is one of the important heritable risk factors for cardiovascular disease and is a target for therapeutic intervention. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) gene polymorphism rs5923 on LCAT enzyme activity and serum HDL-C concentration. Methods: The study...

Plasma lipoproteins in normal and preeclamptic pregnant women

Background: Preeclampsia is one of the most common complications of pregnancy. It is the cause of high morbidity and mortality for mothers and fetuses, especially in developing countries. The etiology of preeclampsia is unknown. One of the hypothesis on pathophysiology of preeclampsia is dyslipidemia. The aim of this study was to determine maternal plasma levels of lipoproteins in patients with...
